Samantha Martin, Director
Restoration Ecologist
Sam has a diverse background including horticulture, rare plant species restoration and forestry consulting in the San Juans. A resident of San Juan County since 2007, she has an understanding which comes with time of both the human and plant communities that exist in the islands, and how they affect one another. Her interests include native prairie and rocky bald habitat enhancement, rare species, and the use of ecological forestry practices to actively manage forests for greater diversity, healthier trees, and lower fire risk.
Sam earned her Master of Science degree from the University of Washington in 2008 with a focus in soil science, forest ecology, and the restoration of rare plants in prairie habitats. Sam is proud to also work for The Ecostudies Institute, a non-profit based in Olympia, WA which works with public landowners, such as WA State Parks and the National Park Service, as well as local land trusts to enhance and restore native prairie habitat in western Washington. Sam is a founding member of the Orcas Huntress Guild and a certified forest therapy guide with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy.
